An immigration and customs enforcement officer fatally shot a man Friday in Franklin Park, a suburb about 18 miles west of Chicago.
The department of homeland security said officers were trying to arrest the man, who had a history of reckless driving. The suspect refused orders and drove his car at them, hitting and dragging one of the officers. The officer then opened fire, perceiving a threat to his life.
Both the officer and the suspect were taken to a local hospital. The suspect was pronounced dead, while the officer is being treated for injuries.
“We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement,” said assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin, as quoted by The New York Post.
The shooting occurred less than a week into “Midway Blitz,” an immigration enforcement operation ICE is conducting in Chicago.
McLaughlin said that “viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement” have made officers’ work more dangerous.
