NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani 's video message on the occasion of Rakhi invited fresh trolling as social media users asked why this year he popped up with a wish for a Hindu festival. "Hello everyone, I am just popping in to wish you all a Happy Rakhi. I hope you are having a lovely day with your family, wherever you may be," Mamdani said in the video. Mamdani, however, wishes on Rakhi every year.
'Sir, this is America," one comment to his video message read.
"Vivek Ramaswamy, Tulsi Gabbard hasn’t even wished for Rakhi. Here comes Mamdani who wishes for a Hindu festival," n X post went viral for its pointed criticism though many people pointed out why Vivek Ramaswamy and Tulsi Gabbard did not wish. Though Gabbard is a Hindu, President Donald Trump's DNI is not from India and Vivek Ramaswamy, they said, is trying hard to become White.
"Lol 😂 Vivek is trying so hard to be white. And Tulsi isn’t Indian she’s Samoan so they don’t celebrate Raksha Bandan," one wrote.
"Show me a video of him wishing last year. He is hoping for Hindu votes while being a devout anti-Hindu," another wrote.
"Tulsi is not an Indian. She is a Iskcon Hindu. She is native Hawaiian. She might not know many festivals which hindus in India celebrate.. vivek is trying to please MAGA by looking more American. Mamdani already knew MAGA will not vote so his Appeasement is for diaspora people," one wrote.
One pointed out that Vivek's origin is in Tamil Nadu where Rakhi is not a huge festival while Mamdani is more closer to communities celebrating Rakhi.
Raksha Bandhan is a traditional Hindu festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters tie a decorative thread around their brothers' wrists symbolizing her well wishes in return the brothers vow to protect them.
