GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the Northeast for the second time in as many weeks on September 22 to launch the 1,840-km Arunachal Frontier Highway , a Rs 42,000-crore project for a two-lane track running parallel to the historic McMahon Line separating India and China.
The highway will run from Tawang district's Nafra in the west to Vijaynagar in Changlang district, connecting India's easternmost inhabited region that protrudes into Myanmar from three sides to form a strategic wedge at the edge of the LAC. NH-913 , the highway's official nomenclature, will be a strategic lifeline in more ways than one, officials said. The highway is expected to ease troop movement and strengthen border preparedness across a region previously isolated by mountainous terrain.
For decades, the eastern Himalayas remained disconnected from the mainland, leaving frontier villages vulnerable and the armed forces constrained by terrain. The proposed highway aims to carve a high-altitude artery through some of the most security-sensitive and remote regions of Arunachal.
