Visually-challenged girl who cracked MPSC last year is now revenue assistant

AMRAVATI: Visually challenged Mala Papalkar, who made headlines by cracking Maharashtra Public Service Commission's exam for clerk-cum-typist's exam (Group C) in May last year and reported by TOI, on Thursday got a letter informing about her posting as revenue assistant.

She is likely to report for work at the Nagpur collectorate in the next 8-10 days after document verification.

Mala was found dumped in a dustbin at Jalgaon railway station 25 years ago. With her parents unknown and untraceable, police took first took her to a remand home in Jalgaon and later shifted to a better-equipped rehab home for the deaf and blind run by Padma awardee Shankarbaba Papalkar at his Wazzar ashram in Paratwada tehsil of Amravati district.

Shankarbaba, 81, not just give Mala his surname, but also nurtured her talent, schooled her in braille. Gifted with an exceptional memory, Mala later completed her postgraduation too. She had earlier made two failed attempts to crack civil services' exam for tehsildar's post in August 2022 and December 2023.

Mala, driven by her sheer grit and determination, prepared for the MPSC exam, under the guidance of Amol Patil, director of a coaching institute. Patil gave her audio cassettes and online guidance. Mala took help of a writer for her MPSC exam and cracked it last year.

Patil said Mala's success is an inspiration for students appearing for competitive exams. Sixty-seven students of the institute were selected as revenue assistants.

A jubilant Patil and other teachers at the institute felicitated her on Saturday. "Mala's success is immensely satisfying," Patil told TOI. Other students smeared Mala with gulal to celebrate her success. Ajay Wankhade, Supriya Patil and Pradeep Ghive, who played an important role in shaping Mala's academic career, were present on the occasion.
