Nagpur: A 34-year-old tax consultant allegedly duped a 78-year-old senior citizen of Rs28.16 lakh by forging income-tax documents and falsely claiming to settle his tax dues.
According to Sonegaon police, the victim, Mahadev Bhaurao Dandekar, a resident of Pulgaon in Wardha district, approached the accused, Mayuri Anil Madarkar alias Mayuri Ganpat Chithade, for help with filing his I-T returns between April 1, 2022 and June 30, 2024.
Chithade falsely told Dandekar that he owed a tax liability of Rs58.20 lakh and assured him that she could help reduce the amount. To execute the fraud, she took three signed cheques from the complainant and later handed over fake documents showing clearance of tax dues.
Suspecting irregularities, Dandekar consulted another tax consultant and found that the documents were forged. He also discovered that Chithade withdrew Rs28,16,912 from his bank account using the cheques provided earlier. Though the accused returned part of the money, she allegedly failed to return the remaining Rs18,50,412.
Following the complaint, Sonegaon police booked Chithade under Sections 406, 420, 468, 471, and 504 of the Indian Penal Code.
