Nothing is better than having a long hot shower with all your favourite products when the weather is cold outside and then stepping out to wrap yourself up in a cosy soft towel. Over time, though, towels will lose their fluffy texture because most people do not realise they are not washing them correctly and causing the fabric to become stiff and scratchy.
However, Rory Donnelly, an expert from Copper Clothing, has revealed restoring towels back to their original soft state is very easy, as all you need is a splash of vinegar. He said: "The secret to having those fluffy, hotel-quality towels is cheap, easily available, and the perfect household hack. The answer is simple: washing towels with vinegar. No, we do not mean apple cider vinegar or balsamic, for that matter. It's a towel, not a tossed salad! Washing towels with white vinegar is an ages-old hack that has been used by homeowners to keep their towels clean, fluffy, and fresh, and to keep them looking like the day they were purchased."

Many of us automatically add fabric softener to every load of laundry but you should avoid using it on towels as they are highly absorbent and the leftover soap will clog up the fibres.
This build-up can create a waxy layer that not only makes towels feel rough but can also stop trap odours, leaving them smelling awful.
However, white vinegar contains acetic acid, which can dissolve any greasy residue from the fabric towels will be able to absorb water again and be washed properly.
White vinegar acts as a natural fabric softener to make towels feel soft again but is also antibacterial so will also help towels feel a lot cleaner and fresher.
How to use white vinegar to make towels soft againWhen washing your towels, make sure you are washing them separately from your other laundry and only doing small loads at a time. Overcrowding your washing machine also stops towels from being able to rinse off, which will also stiffen them up.

Add your towels to the washing machine and then add 250ml of distilled white vinegar to the detergent drawer where you normally add the fabric softener.
Do not use any softener at all when washing towels, but it is fine to add your laundry detergent like you normally would.
Then, simply place your towels in a hot cycle, and make sure to also add a extra rinse cycle to ensure they have been thoroughly washed.
Once the washing machine cycle is finished, remove the towels and give them a good shake to fluff up the fibres before air drying. Your towels should feel much softer, making every post-shower moment this autumn feel extra cosy.
