A bakery chain branded "better than Greggs" is set to open a number of new stores across the country. Known for its affordable, on-the-go food options like sausage rolls, steak bakes, sandwiches, and sweet treats, Greggs is among the first choices for many.
However, the beloved British bakery is likely to face a tough competition as Wenzel's The Bakers, is working on another expansion plan. Established in 1975, the bakery, which started as a family-run business, has already over 100 stores in the UK. By the end of 2023, it opened in nine new locations as it continues to set up its feet in the market.
The popular bakery offers everything from pizza to meal deals, and is now teaming up with Southern Co-op to launch new franchise stores across the UK.
Wenzel's is set to launch its first new standalone branch in Guildford on September 10, marking a significant step in its expansion plans.
While this opening signals the beginning of a broader rollout, the bakery chain has stated that it cannot yet confirm how many additional stores will follow or where they will be located.
The announcement suggests a phased approach to growth, with more details expected to emerge as plans solidify.
It added: "We see Co-op as a key partner in terms of strengthening our store count in both the short and long term."
"We look forward to working with Southern Coop on these openings to bolster our nationwide presence, offering great-tasting baked goods to communities across the UK."
Sarah Wenzel, chief of Wenzel's, said: "We're delighted that Southern Co-op have chosen to be our franchise partner and are confident that our collaborative partnership will be mutually beneficial and rewarding in the coming year".
Wenzel's offers a sausage roll priced at £2.50, making it a more premium option compared to Greggs' £1.30 version.
In addition, the bakery serves wraps for £5.60 and pasta dishes for £3.25, positioning itself slightly higher on the price scale for quick bites.
On X, one fan said: "Wenzel's vegan sausage roll is better than Greggs and their doughnuts *chefs kiss*".
