Talented news anchor Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu was killed in an armed robbery at her home on September 29. An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the journalist's tragic death as tributes have been flooding in for the 29-year-old.
According to the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, she jumped from the third floor of her flat in Nigeria while trying to evade the robbers. Police found her unconscious and rushed her to Maitama General Hospital, but she was sadly pronounced dead. The police have launched a special investigation team to track down the suspects and bring them to justice.
Following the heartbreaking news, the ARISE News presenter's employer issued a heartfelt statement: "It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of ARISE News announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer.
"She tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident at her residence, which is currently under investigation by the police."
The statement added: "She was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.
"Beyond the airwaves, she was a lawyer, a consummate professional, and a supportive colleague. She was a friend to many."
It concluded: "We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie's parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
"Sommie's voice may now be silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory."
Somtochukwu was killed at her residence in Abuja, Nigeria, and tributes are continuing to pour in for her.
One person wrote: "May her precious soul rest in perfect peace." A second added: "Such a sweet, sweet girl. I pray she's sleeping sweetly beside God. I pray her family receives the healing they need to bear this loss."
A third shared: "I can't believe this shocking news about Sommie. I was due to attend her forthcoming wedding and 30th Birthday Celebrations."
