Many people have heard about using the popular cleaning duo of baking soda and vinegar to unclog drains, believing it to be a natural and effective solution. However, while this mixture can create a fizzing reaction, it is often not strong enough to break down stubborn drain clogs.
The chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar produces carbon dioxide, which can create pressure in a closed container. While it may seem like that bubbling action would effectively clear pipes, the reality is that home plumbing systems are not closed containers, so the pressure can't build up enough to dislodge serious clogs. The team at UK Gas Plumbers noted that there is a natural solution that can be "effective" - soda crystals.

Soda crystals, also known as washing soda or sodium carbonate, are a versatile household staple that can be used for a variety of cleaning tasks, like softening towels, removing grease and unblocking drains.
Soda crystals are much gentler on your pipes, preventing damage that can be caused by corrosive chemicals.
So how do they work? Well, soda crystals are highly alkaline, which means they can break down organic matter that is causing a blockage in drains.
When soda crystals are mixed with water, they create a solution that can "dissolve grease, hair, soap scum, and other debris" that may be obstructing the flow of water through the pipes.
The plumbers said, "This alkaline solution works by breaking down the bonds that hold the blockage together, allowing it to be easily washed away."
How to unblock drains with soda crystalsStart by pouring hot water down the drain to help loosen the blockage. Measure out half a cup of soda crystals and pour them directly into the drain.
Follow the soda crystals with another kettle of boiling water to help dissolve the crystals and wash away the blockage.
Allow the solution to sit in the drain for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for stubborn clogs.
Finally, flush the drain with hot water to ensure the blockage has been completely cleared.
By following these simple steps, you can effectively use soda crystals to unblock drains and keep your plumbing system running smoothly without the use of harsh chemicals.
