State pensioners have been urged to make a quick change to their online banking. Experts at savings platform Marygold & Co have urged claimants to make sure they keep on top of their finances. Group CEO Matthew Parden said: "For pensioners, keeping finances simple and organised is crucial."
He shared one practical tip that is easy to follow: "Setting up alerts through online or mobile banking can keep track of payments like the state pension or Winter Fuel Payment, to ensure they arrive on time."
The state pension is typically paid in four week instalments, while the Winter Fuel Payment is a one-off payment for £200 or £300.
Mr Parden also recommended using budgeting tools which can show you your income and your expenditure. He said this can help 'provide reassurance that essential payments are covered and help pensioners maintain financial confidence'.
Another good practice recommended by Mr Parden is to regularly check if you can claim any Government support or benefits. He spoke about some of the tools available to help you work out what you can claim.
The expert said: "The Government's benefits calculator covers Pension Credit, Universal Credit, and council tax reductions, while Citizens Advice can also guide people through options. Getting ahead by reviewing potential support before financial pressures hit - for example, before autumn costs mount - can make a real difference."
Claiming Pension Credit could provide a huge boost to your income. The state pension-age benefit is hugely underclaimed with the average claim providing more than £3,900 a year in support.
The benefits tops up your income, increasing it to £227.10p a week for single claimants and topping up to £346.60 for couples. You can get extra amounts on top of this, such as if you have a severe disability or having caring responsibilities for another adult.
Claiming the benefit also opens up access to other support, such as a free TV licence for claimants aged 75 and over, and reductions off your council tax.
