Rising Pollution and AQI: Expert Tips to Stay Safe at Home

Send Push

With Air Quality Index (AQI) levels rising in many parts of the country, pollution has become a growing concern. Dust, smoke, gases, and harmful particles in the air can make breathing difficult, especially for children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing health conditions. Protecting yourself indoors is just as important as avoiding polluted outdoor air.

How Pollution Affects Health
Tiny particles like PM 2.5 and PM 10 can penetrate the lungs and weaken immunity with prolonged exposure, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases. Other common effects include skin rashes, eye irritation, fatigue, and in severe cases, impacts on the heart and brain. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable.

Home Care Tips from Experts
Dr. L.H. Ghotekar of Lady Hardinge Hospital recommends the following steps to reduce indoor pollution exposure:

  • Ventilate wisely: Open windows briefly in the morning and evening, but avoid leaving them open for long periods.

  • Indoor plants: Aloe vera, spider plants, and snake plants help purify the air naturally.

  • Air purifiers: Use one and clean its filter regularly.

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins.

  • Nutrition: Include foods rich in vitamins C, D, and omega-3 fatty acids to boost immunity.

  • Masks and hygiene: Wear an N95 mask when going out and wash hands and face thoroughly after returning home.

Additional Precautions

  • Avoid smoking indoors.

  • Maintain clean, fresh air with indoor plants.

  • Drink herbal teas and turmeric milk.

  • Do light exercise daily.

  • Consume fruits rich in Vitamin C.

  • Avoid scented chemicals while cleaning.

By following these measures, you can minimize the impact of pollution on your health and maintain a safer, cleaner home environment.
