Donald Trump's unhinged take on US' future laid bare in nine alarming words

Mr Trump had said there are "methods" – if not "plans" – constitutional limit, claims reflected by his niece Mary, 60, in an interview this week. She said: "That's what Donald certainly has in mind. It's not about whether or not he'll run. It's about whether or not he'll leave. It's more likely that he'll just say, 'I'm president for life and I'm not going anywhere'. And he'll challenge people to get rid of him."

And it's those nine, alarming words - "I'm president for life and I'm not going anywhere" - Mary, a psychologist and writer, emphasised are crucial as she says her uncle knows the US is struggling to "get rid of him".

However, the psychologist is also aware of the Democrats' shortcomings. She told : "America is a deeply broken country and it has been for a long time. Donald is not an anomaly. He is, I think, the logical conclusion to the last 40 years of Republican degradation.

"The Democrats continue to not just fail to meet the moment, they fail to understand the moment... And one of my biggest criticisms of the Biden administration is that they didn't see a second Trump term coming and they failed to prepare adequately. Part of it was complacency, part of it was just a failure of understanding where people in this country were."

Speaking in March, former businessman Mr Trump insisted he was not joking about finding a way to secure a third term in office. The father of five said: "Well, there are plans... There are – not plans. There are methods – there are methods which you could do it, as you know."

The constitution’s 22nd amendment was approved and ratified after concerns were raised when Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was a Democrat, became the only president to be elected for a third and fourth term in the 1940 and 1944 elections respectively. Yet, Mr Trump's recent remarks - and even the markets - indicate the successful circus may well go on.
