Thane: In order to prevent the increase in unauthorized constructions within the Thane Municipal Corporation limits, it was decided to impose a penalty of one and a half times the property tax on such properties. Even after that, since unauthorized constructions are increasing in the city, it has been decided to waive the penalty imposed on unauthorized constructions.
Although one lakh 45 thousand property owners in the city will benefit from it, the municipal treasury will have to bear a deficit of about 150 crores. The municipal corporation, which is already in financial crisis, will be hit hard.

With the aim of waiving the penalty on unauthorized constructions, the decision to waive the fine in Thane Municipal Corporation limits on the lines of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, was taken in the state cabinet meeting held during the monsoon session.
An ordinance was issued late on Monday evening in this regard and the fine on unauthorized constructions from 2009 to 2017 in Thane was waived. The amount of the fine is approximately 150 crores. The administration claimed that this would get the principal amount of property tax due, but will the unauthorised construction owners who paid the fine earlier get the amount back? The administration or the state government has not given an answer to this according to report by Lokmat.

Also, the amount of the fine levied was more than the original tax. Due to this, the property owners were not paying the fines.
The Municipal Corporation had claimed that this had an impact on the revenue received by the Thane Municipal Corporation in the form of taxes; but when this fine was imposed, the relevant department of the Municipal Corporation claimed that the income of the Municipal Corporation had increased; but now the question has arisen as to how the Municipal Corporation got this fine waiver.
