Lucknow: BSP president Mayawati has urged the UP government to take the Fatehpur tomb-temple dispute seriously and, if required, take strict measures to prevent communal tension. The controversy erupted over claims that a tomb in the district is actually a temple.

In a statement on X, Mayawati said no community should be allowed to take steps that could disturb harmony or fuel communal conflict. She stressed that the administration must ensure peace and brotherhood are maintained while dealing firmly with any provocative actions.

The dispute intensified on Monday after BJP’s district president called on Hindu organisations to gather at the tomb site. Protesters reportedly dismantled barricades and occupied the premises for about 20 minutes. During this period, damage was caused to the mazar and graves.

The groups claimed the structure was the historic Thakurdwara temple, hoisted saffron flags, lit incense sticks, and chanted religious slogans. Following the occupation, members of another community arrived, leading to stone-pelting and clashes. Police were deployed to control the situation, and FIRs have been filed against 160 individuals in connection with the violence.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but security in the area has been increased to prevent further escalation.

Local residents have expressed concern that unchecked actions could inflame tensions, urging the government to resolve the matter swiftly through legal and administrative channels.
