Greater emphasis is needed for research towards eliminating pollution in the steel sector, Union Steel and Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy said Tuesday. He was speaking during review meetings of his ministries. Kumaraswamy also emphasised that the Heavy Industries Ministry must give greater encouragement to the domestic production of electric vehicles (EVs).
An official statement said the minister reviewed the PM e-Drive, and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. Officials briefed him on plans to promote greater usage of EVs, the establishment of charging stations, and development of supporting infrastructure.
Kumaraswamy also directed the Steel Ministry to place greater emphasis on research and development for reducing pollution in the steel sector to zero. He also instructed that new strategies must be developed and partnerships strengthened to enhance green steel production.
The statement said discussions are underway with Australian institutions such as Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation(CSIRO) and the University of New South Wales for collaboration in hydrogen-based green steel production and decarbonisation.
